However, as the clock ticked to final day of the negotiation, the whole process turned out to be sham and unfulfilled endeavours as the politicians failed to agree on principles for a Fair Ambitious and Binding ( FAB) deal. The COP which was the 15th session of the parties to Kyoto protocol brought together more than 50,000 delegates representing youth leaders, policy makers, politicians, UN agencys, and climate change experts among many others to discuss the future of the planet.

Why was the participation of young people necessary at the COP?

The participation of young people in this historic conference was very crucial in the sense that as young people, we are one of the most vulnerable groups to climate change. This is because we are to live with what ever decision arrived today at this climate conference. Many of those negotiating might not have to live long enough to witness the more imminent global disaster pose by climate change, hence the question that young people ask, how old will you be in 2050, please don’t bracket our future.

What was my task at the COP?

As youth representative, my task at the cop-15 was to advice, support and work with the Gambia’s climate delegation to negotiate a fair deal needed for national development, especially a deal that put into account the voices and concerns of the young people in the country. Looking at our country’s economy and geographical location, for us, the issues of climate change is matter of life and death, hence the need for urgent action.

Therefore, every morning, our national delegation meets at as team to review activities of the previous day and assign new responsibilities. My work was centered more on following side events that have special interest on young people.

Side Events

I attended the following side events:

1. REDD (Reduce Emission on Deforestation and forest degradation).

In this side event, participants discuss the impact of climate change on forest degradation and the role of young people in forest degradation. The side event looks at young people as victims, perpetrators and potential agent of change regaining the forest cover for most vulnerable communities especially in Africa. Key recommendation made for protecting the forest cover was promoting youth participation in community-driven action projects geared toward protecting the forest and forest resources.

2. Meeting with the Dutch minister for development

Youth from various countries met the Dutch to discuss on how best young people can consolidate their efforts for the policy makers on climate change mitigation and adaptation. He reiterated his support to lobby for more fund to support capacity building and climate change adaptation projects and developing green jobs for youth.

4. African youth delegation side events

Through out the conference, Africa youth delegation have had series of meetings geared toward complimenting and supporting Africa’s position. We also had meetings with the prime minister of Kenya, Mr Raila Odinga on the need for Africa to remain undivided in their demands for a FAB deal. We also had series of consultative meeting with other stake holders such as the World Bank, commonwealth parliamentarians etc.

Consultation and networking

During the conference, I also had the opportunity to meet numbers of youth leaders from various NGOs to discuss ways to support and share best practices with youths groups from the Gambia. Among the organizations I met were 350.org, Tearfund, Global biodiversity information centres, USCAN, Australian youth climate coalition, World Bank among others.

Interviews

During the Cop-15, I had a series of interviews with many media houses such as the UN Radio in New York, Fair climate TV, Holland, and Project survival pacific media. Many were concern that the voices of Gambia’s youth are seldom heard in the international youth work despite having a lot to offer. I use the opportunity of these interviews to share vital information pertaining to the little ways in which youth in the Gambia are contributing in the global efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impact of climate change.

Plenary sessions:

Since I was a party delegate (Not Observer) I had the opportunity to attend many of the plenary session and follow strictly the debate and negotiation process and procedure. The COP will go down in history as one of the biggest meeting of the world citizen in a drive to find a solution for a common problem to humanity.

My recommendation:

I believe that for Africa to remain strong against the pressure pose by impact of climate change, the continent should focus more on adaptation and less on the medium and long-term projections of green house gas emissions. In the Gambia, to ensure our climate resilience as a country, I would suggest that the current climate committee to be revisited and become all-inclusive. That is, the committee should include all major stake holders such young people, women, children, politicians, technocrats etc. The committee should also have a legal mandate in which it does operate. We should also come up with country-driven programs that support climate adaptation.

To ensure that the young people become a force to be recon with in the run up to realization of climate resilience at the country level, I would recommend the formation of umbrella body of youth groups involve in climate advocacy work to synergize their efforts.

My Appreciation

Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the members of Global Unification, The Gambia for their unflinching support and dedication towards the realization of climate justice.

1- Une croissance économique durable et soutenue ;
2- Un développement des secteurs productifs ;
3- Un accès garanti des pauvres aux services sociaux de base ;

- La poursuite des réformes et la stabilisation du cadre macro économique ;
- La mise en place d’un système de suivi - évaluation ;
- La finalisation des plans d’actions des plans d’actions des stratégies sectorielles (développement rural, santé, justice, décentralisation) ;
- L’approfondissement des connaissances sur la pauvreté à travers des études et enquêtes.

A la fin de cet exposé, des interrogations et des préoccupations venant de l’assistance ont été notées, elles sont relatives à :
- l’absence d’échéances clairement définies dans la stratégie ;
- le paradoxe entre la retraite qui augmente systématiquement le taux de chômage et la lutte contre la pauvreté ;
- la non prise en compte suffisante des questions de la population dans la SRP.

ALI ABDOU
Journaliste G.U - Niger

De gauche à droite, Mr Ibrahim Thiémogo (économiste G.U – Niger), Docteur Mamane Kanta (Conférencier) et Mlle Aminatou Barka (Représentante G.U – Niger).

Photo de famille vue de profil, 7 membres organisationnels de G.U - Niger.

Photo de famille, Vue de face, 7 membres organisationnels de G.U - Niger.

Stand Up Campaign 2006, Freetown, Sierra Leone

GLOBAL UNIFICATION, SIERRA LEONE

15th - 17th October, 2006.

EVENTS ON THE STAND UP CAMPAIGN FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY.

ATTENDANCE

• UNDP REPRESENTATIVES
• GLOBAL UNIFICATION, SIERRA LEONE
• COALITION OF ALL CIVIL SOCIETY MOVEMENTS IN SIERRA LEONE
• REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS
• REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE ELECTRONIC AND PRINT MEDIA.

In our bid to make sure that we at Global Unification (GU) Sierra Leone take active lead in the 17th October 2006 event on the eradication of poverty, we collaborated with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone, USAID and a host of civil society organisations in Sierra Leone to commemorate this great event. Global Unification, Sierra Leone was immediately recognised as a leading organisation in the eradication of poverty and we were invited to be part of the task force committee of the UNDP, which was to plan the activities of this event.

On the 16th of October 2006, we had a very thought provoking radio programme on UN Radio which was recorded and distributed on all the radio stations and the theme of our discussions was “ working together to eradicate poverty”. We also had a radio jingle which was also used as a means of disseminating or as a transmission belt between organizations and the suffering masses reminding world leaders of their promises and commitments to their people.

We also monitored and took part in a national quiz competition organised in all district headquarters. Football matches were also organised, which were well attended, the winner of the quiz competition was to get a scholarship from UNDP.

On the 17th of October 2006, at about 10:00 am the procession gathered at the National Stadium with banners of all sorts, reminding our leaders and those rich countries to take active part in the eradication of poverty. The procession which consists of over 50 (Fifty) organisations later moved in an orderly manner to the Freetown cotton Tree where a short STAND UP was made for two (2) minutes and an address and pledge was delivered by Mr.Ensah N’Demar on behalf of the coalition of civil society organisations.

As a whole the events were very successful and quite in place, as the message of eradicating global poverty went far and wide in the ears of the young and old, rich and poor, and most especially to the leaders of poor countries and the wealthy nations.

Our National GU Co-ordinator for Advocacy, Lobbying & Campaigning, Mr. Morie Foday played an active part in the successful implementation of the above events. Pictures on the 17th October 2006 have been published below for your attention. Pictures with various organisers of civil society movements in Sierra Leone flanked by our able GU National Co-ordinator for Advocacy, Lobbying & Campaigning were taken, a picture with the Action Aid Coordinator for poverty, Mr. Mohamed Sillah were also taken.

Also worth mentioning is the collective response and efforts of the GU Centre National Co-ordinator Mr. Solomon Baimba, GU National Co-ordinator for Youth Affairs Mr. Joseph Turay, GU National Co-ordinator for Women’s Affairs Miss Lucinda Kargbo and the GU Regional Representative for Freetown Mr. Umaru Woody for all their efforts in trying to make this commemoration a success.

However, the events were well attended as in any part of the world, from the busiest squares in the world, Times Square, New York, to the smallest school in the tsunami – struck Aceh province in Indonesia.
